I will say to readers here, as I do to my clients, that it is wise to go to an ATM before heading out of the city of Oaxaca to the villages if there is a likelihood that purchases will be made. Using USD will also cost you a premium, and certainly in the villages it is really not appreciated though USD will generally be reluctantly accepted. anywhere in the world.īut merchants in Oaxaca do transact business in USD though their preference is pesos. Not once have I been subject to a fraud or anything untoward however it is always a good idea to put the withdrawn amount in your pocket or purse or wallet before departing the ATM area, and take a brief glance around you as you leave. Only once in the past 29 years has there been an error in calculating on the part of the bank, requiring that I file a dispute with my home bank which did take a few months to resolve (in my favour, as a result of a double charge against my home bank account).

Only once in the past 29 years visiting and living (past 15) in Oaxaca, has an ATM eaten my card, requiring I attend at the main bank branch to get it back a day or two later.
