Use defenders as meat shields/barriers especially for archers, priests and heroes.
This helps your fast units get behind your opponent because when your opponent turns to try to advance towards your guy behind him, they'll get hit hard by an attack of opportunity from your defender. A 'get next to then defend' strategy will let you live a lot longer than wasting one swing and making yourself vulnerable to being turned around (flanked). Next turn they will not have enough movement points to enter defensive stance so will be much easier to kill (unless they have the Tireless skill, but Tireless comes later.) Or make a strong opponent that is in defensive stance waste their next turn by letting them retaliate only once on many of your troops. Your fast units usually have crap defense so waste a few hexagons on your approach so that you only hit them from behind once. You have to flank your enemy that are not in defense mode. Your cities are safe for the first 5 turns so you have an opportunity to explore and win some nearby resources. Some AI fuckery going on here? Different rules for the computer opponents? If I can't find a way to play this game where I can actually beat the first fucking campaign I'm going to fuck it off and buy Metro Exodus. I don't remember AOW1 being this hard, it seems like whatever I do the enemy has a better strategy, better units, more units, more resources and the fuckers KNOW WHEN MY CITIES ARE UNDEFENDED despite not being able to see them. I tried holding back and building up, but the enemy just matches everything I do and then takes one of my cities! WTF!? I tried fighting all the monsters for XP and new units, but then nobody is defending my cities and I have to go back several turns AGAIN or, more likely restart, AGAIN. I tried being more aggressive, I lose entire armies attacking the second enemy city. It's getting so boring, but it's way too difficult to just charge thru it.
I'm on the second campaign mission (I think, the one where you control Reskar Scapeshaper the Draconian), every turn takes about half an hour on average, after reloading seven or eight times.
